Project Goals
Create a digital tool that helps people communicate better.

Poppy is a tool made to help you navigate conflict in a healthy and productive way through a guided digital experience. Poppy is built on the practices and principles of nonviolent communication.

Problem
It can be incredibly difficult to maintain healthy communication through conflict. Not everyone is equipped with the tools to navigate conflict in a healthy and productive way.

Goals
  • Make a tool that gently guides the user through self-regulation techniques and emotional exploration.
  • Promote personal growth through self-discovery.
  • Broaden users emotional vocabulary.
  • Prepare the user for conflict resolution.

Primary User Needs
After surveying a variety of individuals of varying ages, backgrounds, and need, one unifying issue that stood out was difficulty navigating conflict.

We identified three primary user needs when it came to navigating conflict:

  • Help me calm down
  • Help me figure out how I feel
  • Help me ask for what I need

Research
Poppy’s self-reflection tools are based on the practices and principles of Nonviolent Communication. Adjusted for digital use, existing therapeutic resources were used to inform user progression. These resources included:

  • Models of the feelings wheel for paced and intentional
emotional exploration
  • Anger Exit and Re-Entry strategies
  • Interactive models on how to make unbiased observations to facilitate healthy conflict resolution
  • Resources on modeling/remodeling language to help with
individual empowerment

In addition to the research done on existing wellness tools, I also conducted competitive analyses of existing wellness apps.

  • Calm and Headpsace focus on meditation and a long term foundation for emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Stress and Anxiety Companion and Happify pull from Dialectical Behavioral and Cognitive Behavioral therapeutic models.

Solution
Poppy makes therapeutic best-practices of healthy communication accessible on-demand.

With tools to help you calm down...

Figure out how you feel...

Remain objective...

And ask for what you need.

All of these newfound insights can accessed when you need them!

Next Steps
Further competitive research on journaling apps will also be conducted to better improve the introspective experience.

Instead of being it’s own application, Poppy could be incorporated into an existing wellness application:

  • This would help Poppy reach an audience that is already focused on self-reflection and emotional growth

  • Nonviolent communication works better with a meditation practice. Headspace has existing meditations meant to address difficult emotions like anger and anxiety.

  • Leveraging a fleshed out ecosystem designed to be a stress-free digital experience.
